The theme of the 2nd edition was "Phoenix between myth and reality" referring to Venice and its magico.
This theme was so appreciated that Fenice S.p.A. proposed us another important and stimulating theme: "Energy and Environment".
For this edition the two societies proposed a theme with a common root. Organisation and artistes will be engaged on "the Myth of the Phoenix as a bridge between energy and environment".
Phoenix, mythical animal which retorned to life from its ashes, is the bridge between the two societies which collaborate to the 3nd edition of this competition.
For one the name Fenice derives from the next theatre which has the same name and that everyone hopes it will come back to lite from its ashes; for the other the myth of Phoenix means the recovery of resorces to create energy. Venice itself is a phoenix; it was born from reclaimed lands and taking advantage of the lagoons.

It grows and develops contrasting those natural difficulties that make its greatness and diffrence from any other city in the world.
It survives in spite of the industrial pressure on its lagoon and it always thinks of its future by planning technologies for saving itself from eternal inundation.
The theme of this competition has been chosen for these affinities which link positively the organization, the sponsor and the beautiful town where the competition will take place.
The competition is aIready started and in this edition, in spite of the rigorous theme, my personal impression is that the artists are much more creative as regards to previous ones. The myth of the phoenix and its connection to energy and environment have been well located and well expressed by different images suggested by Venice itself. Once again I take care of the competition and I notice that the artists' interest is greater and their activity more incited when the theme is indicated and not free.
They partecipate in the competition interpreting the theme in a suggestive and personal way. They don't think to deprive their personal collection of an important work in favour of the competition, but they dedicate all their energies and inspiration for it.
I feel myself grateful for the artists' interest toward this competition and for their choices.
I see a positive anwer to the economical and operative contribution of the two societies which sponsored this 3nd edition of the competition.
Artists developed the theme of energy and environment analysing both the contrasts and the complementary aspects of the argument.
No doubt the operators of eco-energy sector will recognize the artistic thrills on this industrial scenery.
By visiting the exposition and reading this cataIogue the spectator will also be able to find the suggestions that the organizers wanted to give when proposing the theme of the competition.
That is the dynamism of two themes in a constructive comparison which become spur of a respectful development of the man and the environment.
Thanking the public, the artists and the partnerships, to our great satisfaction, we present these works.
We know that Energy and Environment, anaIysed by the artists' look, are the real protagonists of the competition.
